The Ultimate List of Online ESL Teaching Jobs

While many of the best Online ESL Companies are no longer an option thanks to the new Chinese regulations, there are many options to continue teaching. When searching for an ESL Company to work for, keep it mind a few things. Will you be teaching kids or adults? Are they offering a decent pay rate and can they fill your schedule? Have other teachers had good/bad experiences with the company? Do they have a minimum requirement for your schedule? Make sure you take the time to find a company that fits best with you!

Below we have listed some of the most popular Online ESL Tutoring companies along with their pay rates and any extra information. This list is periodically updated. If you have a great teaching opportunity you would like added to the list, please email us at info@goingupeducation.com. We would be happy to include your company details here.

*Please note this list will be updated with more details in the future. Check back anytime you are searching for a new ESL job! A few of these links are referral links. We will earn a small commission if you end up teaching with that company.

**Unless otherwise noted, the stated pay rate is per hour and the company teaches mostly children.

High Paying Companies

Our favorite companies are the ones that pay teachers what they are worth! These ESL companies are paying at least $20/hour for teachers.

Star Kid – $20-25

Classo – $18-20

Protostar Education – $22/40 minute class

Protostar was previously on a hiring freeze. However, they recently reached out to me about scheduling an interview. It looks like they are hiring again! It may be worth reaching out to them a second time!

TNA Tutor (All Ages) – $16-30 CAD

My interview with TNA Tutor was very casual. There was no mock class, just a short conversation. They stand out because they claim to pay a minimum of 3 hours per week for the first 2 months regardless of if you have students or not. This could help with the typical lag in building up a schedule with a new company.

Infinitum Edu (Adults) – 15-22 pounds

Read With You (High Schoolers) – $17-23

Read With You has a 15-hour minimum teaching schedule.

Tutor Eye (All Ages) – $10-30

Ringle (All Ages) $15-20

Ringle prefers teachers with an Ivy League education. You may also be considered if you attended a “Public Ivy League” school such as the University of Maryland. So if you don’t have a Harvard degree, it is still worth a shot!

Lingua Plex (Adults) – $11-22

Lingua Plex hires tutors of Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, and English. They currently have a backlog of English teacher applications but you are still encouraged to apply. With this company, you have an opportunity to earn money not only through teaching but by editing student text for about $5 per page.

1-on-1 English – $20 +incentives

1-on-1 operates out of Vietnam. The last time I checked, the site is not working to take applications.

Skybel – $16-20

If you are looking for weekend hours, you might want to skip this company. They offer classes only on weekdays from 6:00 – 24:00 Korean time.

UAsk Education – $18-30 CAD

UAsk is a Canadian company teaching Chinese kids.

Accent Advisor (Adults) – $15-25

Accent Advisor has a 15-hour minimum teaching requirement. It is a bit unique as their focus is on accent reduction. You will be teaching mechanical mouth movements to reduce accents in non-native speakers. I personally canceled my interview with them after hearing too many negative things about the company. Still, if you are looking for something different, it may be worthwhile.

Lingua Airlines (Adults) – $10-20 per class

Lingua Airlines has a 15-hour minimum teaching requirement. You will be teaching Russians.

Brown Cow English – $16-20

It seems like they only hire UK Teachers.

Pinata Education – $20-25

Medium Pay ESL Companies

If you are willing to get paid a bit under $20 an hour or need something to fill your schedule, these companies are in the medium pay range. The pay is not as high as it should be, but also not as low as many others.

NovaKids – $16+

NovaKids prefers teachers that can work 20 hours per week.

First Future – $16 + incentives

The last time I checked, First Future is not accepting applications at this time.

All Right – $15+

All Right has a 15-hour minimum teaching requirement.

English Everywhere – $8.20 per 30 minutes

I have emailed the owner of this site to find out more about the application process.

Bok Tutors – $13-18

Global VCC – $15-17

With Global VCC, you can only use a PC computer (no Macbook). Although, running something like BootCamp Parallels for Mac may get around this requirement. To apply, you can email shhuh85@naver.com.

Low Pay ESL Companies

These companies are much lower pay than what I believe online teachers should be making. However, sometimes we have to work these during a transition or to fill our schedules. If working for a low pay company, your prep time should be zero. They should either provide lessons or it should be a casual conversation class. Our top pick in this section is Cambly or Cambly Kids. We love that you can log on in your free time and just teach without a set schedule. Carrot Global – $14 Carrot Global was added by one of our readers. They teach adult Korean students. You must work 20 hours per week/minimum.  Classes are Monday to Friday (5am to 10am CST) and Sunday to Thursday (4pm-8pm CST). You must complete a Skype interview, online training, and 2 mock classes. Powwowkid – $14 Cambly/Cambly Kids – $12 Cambly is great for a low-effort job with mostly free conversation lessons. You can log in anytime to chat and bank $10-12 per hour. I recommend going through the process for Cambly Kids because this will get you an extra $2 per class. English2go – $11 This company is based in Costa Rica. Lingoda (Adults) Hi Tutor – $12 Go For Languages (Adults) – $12-16 Live Lingua – $10-15 Live Lingua has a 15-hour minimum teaching requirement. SkyEng – 20k-40k rubles/month Their website says that classes are only 15 minutes long. They want teachers to commit to 15 hours of teaching per week. English Ninjas – $0.16/minute No minimum teaching hours for English Ninjas. Engoo –  (Japanese students) Wuwow – $10

Companies with Unknown Pay

These companies will be moved to other sections as we find out more about them. Lingoda (Adults) TutorABC (All Ages) Yorkshire Academy Yorkshire gives starting teachers about 50-100 lessons per month. My ABC Class Last time I checked there were no openings. English Key Last time I checked there were no openings. Learn Light Learn Light has a 10 hour minimum teaching requirement. Vnaya English Natali  Learnship OSConnect

Tutor Marketplaces

Tutor marketplaces are basically where you can create a teacher profile and be matched with prospective students. Most of the marketplaces take some kind of commission from your classes. Although you can set your rates high, many of these platforms are inundated with low rates. This can make it hard to find students at a higher rate. Still, many teachers have found success with marketplaces. Our top pick in this section would have to be Outschool! We have only heard of teachers having positive experiences with this site. You can teach anything you want and set your own price. There is a high time cost for getting your lessons setup but also a high reward!
Sapient A unique tutor marketplace. Outschool  The average Outschool teacher makes $50/hour and they take 30% commission. Kid Pass Hallo With Hallo you can make up to $30/hour teaaching small groups or 1:1 classes. Preply I don’t like that Preply will take 100% commission off your first class with any student. As you teach a student more, the commission rate will decline from 33% to 18%. SkimaTalk This marketplace takes 20% commission. Kern Training Edusity This is more of a place to create and sell a course. You could create content about any subject and sell to students. Teachable Teachable is another site that allows you to create a course. Verbling Just Learn  SuperProf SuperProf is nice in that they do not take any commission off your classes. Sky Learn  Are You Best Teacher Are you the best teacher? Find out with this Japanese company. Skooli Lang-Land This company actually changes teachers a subscription fee to use their site and find students. You also have to handle payment on your own. It is probably one to pass on. Wordvice

The Private Teaching Route

There is a higher paying path in online teaching, private teaching. Most online ESL companies offer nothing in terms of any benefits anyways. They also have very low pay. Even the highest paying jobs are crumbs compared to what you can make as a private teacher. Private teachers are making $20-30 per class. That is $40-60 per hour and a huge jump up from what the online companies are offering.

Ready to double your pay and add more flexibility to your teaching life? There is a wealth of knowledge out there in Facebook Groups, blogs, and YouTube videos that can get you started.

Your biggest hurdle on this path is finding potential students. If you have even a few private students, you can use an attractive referral program to recruit more. Payment and scheduling is easy to set up using free tools. Keep an eye on our site for a Private Teaching Guide coming soon.

As for private teaching curriculum, some teachers opt for textbooks while others create slides. I prefer the slides for online class. We offer a complete curriculum (currently in development) that spans 6 levels and includes engaging graphics and conversation themes for the kids. You can test a lesson from each unit with a free teacher account.  You can view our curriculum in the Control Center

Let Me Know!

Do you have any experience with these companies? Did you see one you would like to apply for? Would you like your school added to the list? Let me know in the comments or email info@goingupeducation.com.

  1. Hi there. I have applied to numerous companies, I had one interview that turned into a contract- and then did not work out. Once a Korean Engineering company interviewed me to teach the employees business english. Well at the end after I signed the contract- they wanted me to pay a fee to register at the Asian Employee something. Which I did not do.
So my big question is which companies hire South Africans?

    1. Hi Charlotte! Thanks for your comment 🙂

I think you were correct in rejecting the offer with the Korean Engineering people. We should not have to pay fees to register! The companies should take care of that!! You could try with Cambly! You also may want to check out NovaKid, Hallo, or All Right. I plan to cover this in a future blog post! Wishing you luck on your teaching journey.

  2. Hi, Do you know if some of these companies (like Starkid) are still hiring and working since the changes to online ESL in China?

    1. A few months ago I applied to StarKid but never heard back from them. Just yesterday I saw teachers on Facebook indicating Qkids is still going strong and that they were fully booked there. I also believe companies like VIPKid have moved their headquarters outside of China to places like Singapore and are rebuilding more international programs. If the company is not based in China, it should still be going. I believe StarKid is based in Hong Kong.

      1. Hello Teacher Rachel.

You can add Carrot Global to your list. Their Korean adult students are B2B, which companies hire Carrot on behalf of the student. Pay is 0.10 per 10 minutes of class or $14 an hour. There’s no break between classes. You can have 10, 15 20, 30, 60 minutes of classes back to back. They require 20 hours a week MINIMUM There’s no peak hours. You can work from Monday- Friday 5am -10am CST and Sunday through Thursdays 4pm-8pm. The interview process is done through Skype. Then you follow a 1 day online training and the 2 mock classes. To cancel your contract you must give them 30 days written notice or you lose 100 of your payment.
